Three months into the Z890 motherboard launch cycle, FragneticLab’s testing across 14 different SKUs leaves us recommending exactly three boards. ASUS ROG Maximus Z890 Hero ($699) wins the high-end with the best VRM thermal performance under sustained load. MSI MPG Z890 Carbon WiFi ($379) is the mid-range pick with feature parity to the Hero at half the price. Gigabyte Z890 UD AC WiFi ($229) is the budget pick that genuinely doesn’t compromise on the platform’s core capabilities.
The other 11 boards we tested have at least one disqualifying issue — VRM thermal throttling under sustained AVX-512 load, BIOS instability with high-RAM-frequency profiles, or feature-set decisions that don’t match the price tier. Z890 has been a frustrating motherboard generation overall, but these three deliver on the platform’s actual capabilities.
