Valve confirmed The International 2026 will be held in Stockholm, Sweden — the first European TI host city since the 2018 Vancouver event was relocated. The Stockholm bid reportedly beat Berlin and Copenhagen on the strength of the Avicii Arena venue infrastructure and the city’s existing esports tourism ecosystem.
The interesting context is the prize pool. Valve dialed back the crowdfunded prize pool model after 2024’s lower-than-expected community contributions. TI 2026 will run a $5M base prize pool — meaningfully below the $40M peaks of 2021 — with no public crowdfunded boost. FragneticLab thinks this is the new TI normal, and the title’s competitive ecosystem has to adjust to a smaller-but-more-sustainable championship economics rather than the crowdfunded boom-and-bust cycle.
